The Department of Surgery, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, held a Special Grand Round ceremony in honour of an icon and doyen of Surgery, Professor Oluwole Ayoola Atoyebi on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, in the Old Great Hall of the College of Medicine, in appreciation of the contributions and profound impact he had on his mentees and colleagues. The event brought together people from all walks of life who had gathered to celebrate a great mentor, among whom were the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tolulope Odugbemi, OON, NNOM, FAS, FNAMed, Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor David A. Oke FAMedS, Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Health Science, Professor Hakeem Lasisi, among others. In her brief remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS thanked Professor Atoyebi for the positive influence he had on the trajectory of her life and his support and contributions to the University of Lagos. Also, the Chairman of the occasion and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Tolu Odugbemi in his remarks, appreciated everyone present and acknowledged the support and contributions of Professor Atoyebi during his reign as the Provost of the College of Medicine and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos. He also thanked the Department of Surgery for putting up the event in honour of Professor Atoyebi. Earlier in his welcome address, the Head of the Department of Surgery, Professor Oladapo A. Somefun, welcomed everyone and stated that the Special Grand Round Ceremony was organized to celebrate and appreciate Professor Oluwole Atoyebi in recognition of his selfless service to mankind, both at LUTH and the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. He described Professor Atoyebi as a mentor, confidant, brother, and captain during stormy winds, and he prayed that the world would continue to be kind to him. Professor Somefun also used the occasion to recognize and appreciate Mrs. Rebecca Okoronkwo, who served the Department of Surgery and the College of Medicine, University of Lagos for thirty-three years, for her selfless service. The event also featured scientific presentations and goodwill messages by the mentees and colleagues of Professor Atoyebi. In his response, Professor Oluwole Atoyebi, thanked God, appreciated everyone who had come to honour him, and expressed his delight at the Special Grand Round in his honour. Also present at the event were the Deputy Provost, Professor O.A.T. Ebuehi, College Secretary, Dr. Olayinka Obafemi-Moses FNIM, Director of Finance, Dr. Simeon Akinade, Ag. Medical Librarian, Dr. Blessing Ukachi, Director of Engineering Service, Engr. O. Oloyede, C.M.D. LUTH, Professor Wasiu Adeyemo, C.MD. Federal Medical Center, Dr. A. Dada, Professor F.E.A. Lesi, Professor Akin Osibogun, colleagues from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, and members of staff from LUTH, College of Medicine and the University community at large.
