DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE, COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS PAYS LAST RESPECT TO LATE PROFESSOR AUGUSTINE EFEDAYE OWHOVORIOLE

In celebration of his life of service to humanity, the Department of Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, held a commendation service on Monday, September 18, 2023, in honour of the late Professor Augustine Efedaye Ohwovoriole, a retired professor of the Department, for his immense contributions to the Department of Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and the country at large.

In his tribute at the event, which he delivered on behalf of the Vice-chancellor, Professor Folashade Ogunsola FAS, and the Provost, Professor David Adewale Oke, the Deputy Provost, Professor O.A.T. Ebuehi, lauded the enormous contributions of the late Professor to the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Nigeria, and the world.

He described the late professor as a distinguished professor of medicine and a consultant endocrinologist who often viewed issues from various perspectives, giving rise to healthy academic debates that helped advance innovative thinking.

Also in the same vein, the Head of the Department of Medicine, Professor Amam Mbakwem, described the late Professor Ohwovoriole as a devout Christian and an outstanding academic with over 100 academic publications in endocrinology, internal medicine, and medical education. She prayed for the repose of the soul of the late professor. Representatives of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, and other professional bodies to which he belonged, as well as colleagues and associates, also extol the virtues of the late Professor Ohwovoriole.

The late Professor Augustine Efedaye Ohwovoriole was born on October 11, 1945, in Oviri-Olomu, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, graduating with a distinction in paediatrics in 1973, and then proceeded to the United Kingdom to pursue postgraduate medical studies from 1979 to 1980, as well as to the University of Lagos for a master of science degree in clinical psychology in 1983.

He was survived by his wife, children, and family members.

Also in attendance to honour the late professor Ohwovoriole were the college secretary, Dr. Olayinka Obafemi-Moses FNIM, Director of Finance, Dr. Simeon Akinade, Ag. Medical Librarian, Dr. Blessing Ukachi, Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, ably represented by Professor Olawale, Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, ably represented by Professor A.A. Okanlawon, Retired Professors Emuveyan, Giwa-Osagie, Bamidele, Egri-Okwaji, Odum, Magbagbeola, invited dignitaries, members of staff, and students.
