ABOUT MEDICAL LIBRARY
Introduction

The Medical Library is positioned to support the medical students, lecturers, researchers and the entire college community by acquiring, processing and circulating relevant medical resources that aid teaching, learning, research and general academic programmes that take place in the College. We are committed to creating an enabling environment for world-class research as well as high-quality teaching and learning. You can make use of our facilities and training services offered by seasoned Librarians

The library has huge collections of prints and electronic resources covering thousands of e-books and e-journals from numerous online medical databases. To ensure that you have unlimited access to the Library’s resources and services, we also offer virtual/remote services in addition to the fact-to-face services in the library

Some of the activities offered by the Medical Library include:
  1. Round-the-clock digital reference service.
  2. Conducting library orientation/ instruction proramme for new students and users.
  3. Conducting information and digital literacy training for the students and academic members of the college
  4. Training academics, residents and students on advance search techniques to ease retrieval of relevant document from subscription databases and Open Education Resources websites.
  5. Maintaining a resource sharing network with other medical libraries.
  6. Offering faculty research support services.
  7. Document delivery services.
  8. Providing support for e-learning through free Internet services and computers in our state of the art E-Learning Resource Center.

  9. We implore our users to make full use of our resources and services.

    Location The Medical Library is housed on the first, second and third floors of the old Administrative Block of the College. It occupies a floor space of 1, 649.72 square meters (17,758 sq ft) providing a total sitting accommodation for 372 readers, and space for stocking information resources and staff work-room/offices. The first floor, which holds the Journals collections, is the research section of the Library for postgraduate students and researchers. The undergraduate reading hall is situated on the second floor and, lending and reservation is carried out on this floor. The third floor is the E-Learning Resource Centre and also the Computer hub station that houses executive reading, group discussion and seminar/workshop rooms.

    Sections in the Library: The Library has seven sections. They are: Administration, Reference, Serials, Acquisition, Cataloguing, Circulation and the E- Learning Resource Centre. There is also a branch Library situated at the School of Radiography, Yaba.

    Administrative Section: This Section is under the Medical Librarian and is responsible for the administration and development of the Library. It prepares and administers budget, develops policies for Library services operations. It also directs, supervises, disciplines and attends to staff welfare matters. This section also reviews, selects, and authorizes materials for acquisition and other miscellaneous purchases.

    Reference Section: The Reference Section attends to and resolves all categories of queries, involving the use of both quick reference and other related reference services. The section provides Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) and current awareness service. Provision of instruction on how to make use of the Library resources effectively and efficiently is also championed by this Section,

    Serial Section: The Serial Section is responsible for the organization and management of serials collections. It processes the procurement of Journals; both foreign and local. It also processes the binding of Library materials and coordinates the exchange and donation programme of the Library.

    Acquisition Section: This is the section responsible for the acquisition of relevant and pertinent resources for the Library and departmental collections.

    Cataloguing & Classifying Section:
    The Cataloguing Section catalogues and classifies all Library resources including audio-visual. It maintains the Library Catalogue and other files. It also manages and maintains departmental Libraries.

    Circulation Section:
    The Section handles lending services in the Library; it is responsible for the registration and orientation of library users and advises on stock revision. It also maintains a reserved collection composed of recommended texts, rare books, students’ theses and dissertations.

    E-Learning Resources Centre (ELRC):
    The ELRC is the Medical Library ICT hub. The E-Learning offers electronic services e.g. gives login details to scholarly databases, trains users on how to use e-resources, conducts information retrieval on request, etc. In addition, it coordinates Computer Based Tests (CBT), workshops and seminars in the College. The ELRC houses computer systems with Internet access meant for accessing the library databases.

    Radiography Library:
    The Radiography Library is a branch of the Medical Library situated at the Radiography annex of the College at Nos. 2-4 Taylor Drive, Off Edmund Crescent, Medical Compound, Yaba. The library is mainly for Radiography students. It provides reference, circulation, and electronic resources services.

    Hours of Opening and Closing:
    Mon – Fri 8.00 am – 10.00 pm
    Saturday: 10.00 am – 8.00pm

    The Library is closed on Public holidays.

    Cloak Room:
    The Library has a cloak room on the ground floor of the Medical Library building for the deposit of users’ bags, brief cases and other personal effects. This facility is manned by the Library Porters.
