INVITATION TO A SENSITIZATION PUBLIC LECTURE ON BIOSAFETY AND BIOSECURITY MANAGEMENT AT THE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE, UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS

Biosafety is the protection of a person, community, and environment from unintentional exposure to pathogens and toxins while biosecurity deals with measures taken to protect against unauthorized access or intentional release of harmful pathogens/toxins by bad people. The 2017 WHO report on biosafety and biosecurity capacity showed that Nigeria scored very low, which had resulted in efforts towards promotion of sustainable adoption and institutionalization of Biological Risk management (BRM) in Nigeria.

To achieve this goal, several national workshops have been organized and recommendations included the need to incorporate BRM into existing curricula of Human Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and other biomedical laboratory sciences, establish an institutional BRM committee, and increase awareness amongst staff members, especially in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic and other emerging diseases.

The College of Medicine, the University of Lagos in line with the above was among the first to constitute a BRM committee with the mandate to formulate a Biological Risk Management policy for the College, ensure the teaching and practice of biosafety, and biosecurity, and create awareness of decontamination practices.

The BRM committee in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories, USA is organizing a 2-day workshop which will be preceded by a Campus-wide Sensitization Public Lecture to be delivered by Dr. George Wudiri, Sandia National Laboratories, Center for Global Security and Cooperation, Albuquerque, USA.

This workshop is not only apt but also important because the presence of several laboratories handling harmful pathogens makes the university community and environment vulnerable to threats posed by low levels of biosafety and biosecurity in managing these pathogens. It is on this note therefore that all the HODs as key stakeholders, whose participation is of cardinal importance to the realization of the set goal.

You are hereby invited to attend and also encourage all your staff to attend the Public lecture/Grand Round.

It will be a great flip to the achievement of this mandate, to have you all fully participate in this which is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 23rd February 2022 from 9.00 am to12noon, at Hall 36. Those who are unable to attend physically can join through the zoom link indicated below.
