He noted that the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, has consistently remained one of Africa\u2019s foremost centres of medical education, research, innovation and clinical excellence. According to him, the establishment of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and the hosting of its inaugural international conference demonstrate CMUL\u2019s commitment to remaining at the forefront of biomedical discovery and healthcare innovation.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Minister disclosed that the Federal Government has committed over \u20a6217 billion within the last two years towards strengthening medical education, infrastructure and healthcare training across the country, while reaffirming government\u2019s commitment to supporting research, innovation and the development of a world-class healthcare workforce.<\/p>\n\n<p>In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, described the conference as a defining milestone in the University\u2019s quest for global relevance in biomedical research and innovation. She noted that the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, established in 2025, was created to consolidate five core departments and strengthen translational research, precision diagnostics and healthcare innovation. She further highlighted several strategic initiatives of the Faculty, including plans for a Centre for Cancer Genomics and Precision Medicine, a Digital Pathology and Artificial Intelligence Diagnostics Laboratory, and a National Biobank and Tissue Repository.<\/p>\n\n<p>The Provost of CMUL, Professor Ademola Oremosu, described the conference as a moment of pride for the College, stating that it reflects the institution\u2019s enduring legacy of excellence in medical education, research and service. He encouraged participants to leverage the conference to build collaborations, exchange ideas and develop innovative solutions capable of addressing Africa\u2019s healthcare challenges.<\/p>\n\n<p>Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, Professor Fatimah Abdulkareem, welcomed participants to the Faculty\u2019s inaugural international conference, describing it as the beginning of a transformative journey towards positioning the Faculty as Africa\u2019s leading hub for biomedical research and innovation. She explained that the Faculty was established to bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and clinical practice through multidisciplinary collaboration and cutting-edge research.<\/p>\n\n<p>A major highlight of her address was the launch of the \u20a61 Billion Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences Endowment Fund, designed to support research, infrastructure development, scholarships and strategic biomedical initiatives. She also unveiled the African Journal of Basic and Translational Clinical Sciences (AJBTCS), a peer-reviewed publication aimed at promoting high-quality scientific research and increasing Africa\u2019s visibility in global biomedical scholarship. She called on government, development partners, corporate organisations, alumni and philanthropists to support the Faculty\u2019s vision of building a sustainable Centre of Excellence in biomedical research.<\/p>\n\n<p>The conference featured keynote presentations, plenary sessions, panel discussions, scientific paper presentations, poster exhibitions, research showcases and networking opportunities, providing participants with a robust platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange. Awards and recognition were also presented to deserving retired academic staff of the Faculty in appreciation of their invaluable contributions to teaching, research and mentorship.<\/p>\n\n<p>The successful hosting of the maiden International Conference of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences marks a significant milestone in the history of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos.
