On Wednesday, 16th October 2019, the College of Medicine, University of Lagos hosted dignitaries from all works of life in the Old Great Hall to celebrate the First Provost of the College and the 57th Founders’ day celebration.The Provost, Prof. F.E.A. Lesi welcomed all guests, past & present Provosts, past & present Deputy Provosts, Past & present College Secretaries, Staffs and Students to the celebration of an icon who was passionate about Medical care and exemplary in dressing. Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS was unavoidable absent but was ably represented by Prof. Folashade T. Ogunsola (Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development Services) while the Chairman of the occasion Chief J.A. Obafemi- Olopade, OFR gave a short speech to declare the event open. The wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr. (Mrs) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu was the guest of honour and ably represented by Dr. (Mrs.) Ibironke Sodeinde (Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Primary Health Care Board).
Dr. Adekunle Olubola Hassan (C.E.O, Eye Foundation Hospital Group) was the guest lecturer of the celebration. He is a renowned Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and an Alumnus of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. Dr Hassan spoke on the theme: “Health Challenges in Nigeria: Building on the Legacies of Our Leaders”. He talked about Prof. H.O.Thomas as a man who spent a lot of time thinking and meditating on possible solutions to human problems. A man who was concerned about the unity of Nigeria, respect for learning and threat of tribalism. Also, he enumerated Nigeria Health Challenges, Leadership gaps and possible solutions to building on the legacies of our leaders.
A short interview displayed of key principal officers of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos and Lagos University Teaching Hospital was projected to the public. The short video was to honour the man, Professor. H.O. Thomas and show ways of improving Healthcare sector in Nigeria. The Provost also used the avenue to solicit for the purchase of a brand-new bus for students of the College which will assist in conveying students for community outreach.
Dr. Adekunle Hassan (Guest speaker), the Horatio Oritsejolomi Foundation and Chief J.A. Obafemi-Olopade, OFR received awards from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. The Chairman Organizing Committee, Prof. S.R.A. Akinbo (Deputy Provost CMUL) gave the vote of thanks while Dr A. A. Oremosu was the Master of Ceremony.
