The Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Medicine, University of Lagos held their Sixth(6th) Induction Ceremony of 2019/2020 session on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at the Old Great Hall, College of Medicine, Idi-araba, Lagos.
The College Secretary, Dr. O.A. Obafemi-Moses, FNIM in his welcome address congratulates the forty(40) Inductees for the attainment of their feats and finishing well and strong. He appreciates the proud parents onsite and offsite for their financial, spiritual and moral support. He advised them to be diligent in all their duties and to always remember to give back to their Alma mater. He also implored them to go and explore the world of medical laboratory science because they have conquered and actualised their dreams.
The Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Professor Oluyemi Akinloye said that COVID-19 pandemic had exposed the important role of Medical Laboratory Scientists in health care globally. He highlighted the importance of diagnosis, screening or testing could no longer be underestimated in health care. He advised the inductees to join the league of noble health professionals to save the life of people in the society.
The Provost, Professor David Adewale Oke who was ably represented by the Deputy Provost, Professor O.A.T. Ebuehi charged the inductees to take responsibility by taking advantage of any training opportunity that may arise in future. He urged them to develop thinking ability to proffer the best solution to humanity and also contribute enormously to the development of our nation. He implored them to find their passion which could help to build success, transform life and career. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe ably represented by the Director, Academic Planning, Professor Mopelola Olusakin appreciates the parents that has done excellently well in sending them to school to study and also congratulates the inductees for the successful completion of their programme. She said the world outside is saturated and is different from the campus life where they have immunity and support from the management, parents, guardians and friends. She advised them that as they are leaving the University, they must have something they can lay hands on and not to stay at one spot writing job applications while waiting for someone to give them money to start up something.
The Guest Lecturer, Mr. Manason Garkuwa Rubainu talked about Validation of Test Results to enhance the profession. He stated that experiments are controlled to ensure that the materials that are produced by manufacturers are able to do what they want them to do all the time. He advised that all the results that are sent to the Physicians must be of good quality that must meet required standard, if the results are not quality then a wrong signal has been sent to the Physician. He said to have quality results, three characteristics must be considered.
Firstly, it must be Reliably Performed that is, the experiment has followed all the necessary controlled activities.
Secondly, it must be Accurate (Accuracy) that is, the true representation of what you are looking for should reflect positively to the thinking of the Physician.
Thirdly, there should be Timeliness of results to perform the way it should be.
The Registrar, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria.(MLS CN), Dr. Tosan Erhabor who was represented by the Deputy Registrar, Dr. Lawrena Okoro urged the inductees to be diligent, and become a reference point and competent Medical Laboratory Scientists in carrying out their duties to enhance accuracy and validation of Test Results thereby expanding their Profession. She administered the Oath-Taking Ceremony and presented the Provisional Licenses to all the Inductees. The Head, Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Professor M.T. Niemogha archored the presentation of Inductees for oath taking ceremony and the presentation of awards to inductees who preformed exceptionally well and some invited dignitaries as well.
The Deputy Provost, Professor Ebuehi on behalf of the Provost, Professor David Oke gave the closing remarks.
