The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Lagos, Dr. Wale Babalakin, (SAN), led other members of the Council on a familiarization visit to the College of Medicine,University of Lagos on Monday, January 22, 2018. The Pro-Chancellor and his entourage were received in a brief reception in the Board Room of the College by the management team led by the Provost, Professor F.E.A. Lesi. In his familiarization tour of faculties in the College, Dr. Babalakin and the Members of the Governing Council visited the Faculties of Clinical Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences and Dental Sciences where they were received by the Deans and some members of staff who all presented their achievements and challenges. At the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, the Dean, Prof. J.D. Adeyemi highlighted some challenges faced by the Faculty which includes incessant disruption of academic activity, funding for practical examinations and among others.
In the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, the Dean, Prof. O.A. Magbagbeola presented the general needs of the faculty ranging from the urgent renovation of the existing facilities, the present state of the Animal House and many others.The Dean, Faculty of Dental Sciences, Prof. O.O. Sofola also highlighted the challenges faced in the faculty to the Chairman of the Council which includes lack of interest in the training of Dental students, poor infrastructures such as Phantom Head Laboratory/Simulation Laboratory and many others. In his response, the Pro-Chancellor noted that his visit to the College of Medicine was very enlightened which according to him; the enlargement of the environment is not negotiable.
He emphasized the need to have a conceptual design with budgeting, resources and demonstrable plan stating that there must be a roadmap and conceptual design after which there should be the cost of building and then look for a donor for project execution.
Dr. Babalakin noted that the Iconic Building project requested in the College would require a plan and the cost of putting it in place as the council will expect to get details from the management of the College in order to ascertain what would be done and the interim cost.
He also said that some of the buildings in the College can be raised by one floor which also required knowing the cost before embarking on its execution.
