THE DEPUTY PROVOST


Prof. S. R. Akinwumi AKINBO is a professor of Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapist, and his professional skills areas are, Musculoskeletal and Orthopeadic Disorders Evaluation & Management, Sports Injury Preventions and Management, Pain Management,

Wellness and Stress Management, Education and Research. He is a recipient of several academic, professional and community awards within and outside Nigeria.

Prof Akinbo is a member of several professional associations within outside Nigeria, among which are International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and International Society of Physiotherapy Journal Editors (ISPJE). He has attended over 150 national and international conferences and workshops, and has presented scientific paper in most of the conferences/workshops attended. He was a Guest/Keynote Speaker in over 40 meetings (Seminar, Conferences, Workshops etc) both nationally and internationally. He has published over 90 scientific research findings in peered reviewed journals. He is the author of the popular book STRESS MANAGEMENT AND HEALTHY LIVING

Prof Akinbo is currently the Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, and honorary consultant, Lagos University Teaching Hospital. He spearheaded the development and implementation of postgraduate academic programmmes at the MSc, MPhil and PhD levels in his Department. Over the years, he has supervised nine (9) PhDs, thirty (30) MSc theses and dissertations, and over one hundred and fifty (150) B. Physiotherapy research projects into completion. Two of the PhD theses that he supervised, won the Best PhD Thesis in the Faculty of Pharmacy and College of Medicine PhD Thesis Award of the School of Postgraduate Studies of University of Lagos in the year 2010 and 2014 respectively.

Outside the University, Professor Akinbo has served in various capacities nationally and internationally. He was a Visiting Scholar, Department of Physiotherapy, Bayero University, Kano from 2009 to  2010, in addition to being an external assessor for Physiotherapy Promotion Exercise in several hospitals in Nigeria and external examiner for both undergraduate and postgraduate professional examinations in most of the Physiotherapy training Universities in Nigeria.

Moreover, he has worked assiduously as chairman and member of quite a lot of academic and professional accreditation panels for the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board (MRTB) to several universities, teaching hospitals and federal medical centers in Nigeria. These include: Chairman of the MRTB Accreditation Committee that developed academic and Clinical Accreditation Instruments for Physiotherapy Training/Academic and Clinical Institutions (Hospitals) in Nigeria; Team Leader for the development of Sports Physiotherapy Curriculum for Postgraduate Clinical Residency Programme of the National Postgraduate Physiotherapy College of Nigeria (NPPCN) as well as member of the NUC Panel that developed accreditation instruments, Benchmark Minimum Academic Standard (BMAS) for Postgraduate Programmes being taught in Nigerian Universities for the Basic Medical and Health Sciences disciplines and NUC Panel that developed Bachelor of Science Curriculum for Prosthesis and Orthosis in Nigerian Universities.

Prof Akinbo was a former Editor-in-Chief and Chairman, Editorial Board of Nigerian Journal Medical Rehabilitation and Editor, Nigerian Quarterly Journal Hospital Medicine is currently one of the Editors and member of the Editorial Board of Research in Medicine, Science and Technology (University of Lagos Medicine and Science Based Journal).
