Professor MOBOLANLE OLUGBEMIGA OGUNLEWE of the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dental Sciences, College of Medicine of the University of Lagos will deliver the Eleventh (11th) Inaugural Lecture of the University of Lagos in the 2015/2016 Academic Session on Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at 4.00p.m in the Main Auditorium of the University, Akoka.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Rahamon A. Bello, FAEng; will preside over the Lecture entitled: “Changing The World, One Smile At A Time”. Members of the University Community and the public are cordially invited.
Professor OGUNLEWE was born on March 25, 1957 in Ibadan, Oyo State of Nigeria to the family of Mr. Morounkade and Mrs. Wuraola Alabi-Oyo of blessed memory. She attended Baptist Day School, Oke-Ado, Ibadan between 1963 and 1969, St. Anne’s School, Molete, Ibadan, from 1969 to 1973, and Polytechnic, Ibadan from 1974 to 1976 for her primary, secondary and post secondary education. Thereafter, she proceeded to the University of Lagos, to study Dentistry in 1976 and bagged a Bachelor Dental Surgery degree. She emerged as the best graduating Dental Student in the Final Examination in 1981. Upon graduation in 1981, Professor Ogunlewe did her Housemanship at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), from 1981 to 1982.
She observed the mandatory National Youth Service at the Military Hospital, Ojo from 1982 to 1983. She began her residency programme in 1986 as a Junior Registrar and was a Senior Registrar between 1988 to1993. The amiable Professor passed the final fellowship examination and became a Fellow of West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in 1993. She was appointed Consultant of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, LUTH in 1994 until date.
The thoroughbred of Dental Surgeon’s academic career at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos began when she was appointed as Lecturer 1 in 1994. She rose steadily to the post of Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in 2002 and 2007 respectively. She was elevated to the position of Professor in 2011.
Professor Ogunlewe is a scholar who has impacted on her community and the society. The astute administrator has served the University and the College of Medicine meritoriously in various administrative and academic capacities among which are: Member of the University Senate (2011 till date); Academic Board, CMUL; Board of Studies, Faculty of Dental Sciences; Appointments and Promotion Committee (Academic), CMUL; Students Affairs Committee, CMUL; Chairman, Male Hostels Management Committee and Hall Mistress, Manuwa Hall. She has also served as Chairperson of several Investigative panels in the CMUL. Prof. Ogunlewe served as the Acting Head of Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery from 2005 to 2007 and is Head from August 2015 till date to both College of Medicine and LUTH.
She is a recipient of many fellowship, grants and awards. These include Clinical Fellow, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (1995) and Fellow, International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (2007). She facilitated a grant from the Smile Train Organization (NGO in USA) that enables the Lagos University Teaching Hospital to provide free treatment for patients with Cleft Lip and Palate deformities (2007 until date). She also received other awards which include Chief Medical Director’s Award for outstanding performance during the 50th Anniversary of LUTH (2012); Certificate of Recognition by Smile Train “ As an Educational Affiliate Providing compassionate care to the World citizens” (2008). She also recorded significant achievements to her credit, among which are: Best graduating Dental Student (1981), 1st Female Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Nigeria; 1st Female President, Nigerian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and 1st Female Councilor representing Nigerian Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons at the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
The inaugural lecturer has actively participated in the administrative leadership of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) among which are: member, Management Board (2008-2012); Top Management Committee (2008-2012); 1st Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, LUTH (2007-2008) and Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, LUTH from 2008 to 2012. In this position, Professor Ogunlewe was responsible for the supervision of the eighteen (18) Clinical Departments, Residency programme and activities of seven training Schools of the Hospital. She also served as Chairman, Management Committee, Chevron Molecular Biology Laboratory (2012-2016) and the Acting Chairman, Board of Studies, School of Basic Dental Nursing, LUTH (2015 till date)
Professor Ogunlewe is actively associated with many professional bodies and learned societies. She is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM); Institute of Healthcare Improvement, Boston, Massachusetts, USA; International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; Nigerian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons; Nigerian Medical Association (NMA); American Association of Cleft Lip and Palate; Pan African Association of Cleft Lip and Palate and Nigerian Dental Association (NDA).
The prolific researcher has served as a reviewer for local and international journals. She has over fifty-eight (58) publications in peer-reviewed journals in collaboration with researchers in various faculties in the University as well as outside the university. She also supervised at least eleven (11) dissertations.
Professor Mobolanle Olugbemiga Ogunlewe is happily married to Mr. Adeleke Ogunlewe of the Fadugba Ogunlewe Royal family of Igbogbo, Lagos State and blessed with three lovely children.
Buses will depart from the foyer of the Administrative Block for the Auditorium in Akoka at 3.00 p. m. prompt. The Provost enjoins all members of staff and students to turn out en-masse for the lecture to honour our Inaugural Lecturer in the tradition of the College.
