The 12th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, visited the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos on Friday, November 17, 2017.
The Vice-Chancellor was received inside the Old Great Hall of the College by the management team led by the Provost, Professor F.E.A. Lesi with the large turnout of both Academic and Non- teaching staff.
While welcoming the new Vice-Chancellor, the Provost, Professor F.E.A. Lesi in a power point presentation title “Aligning the vision of the College of Medicine to that of the 12th Vice-Chancellor” pledged the cooperation and support of the entire staff and students in helping the Vice-Chancellor actualize his vision for the University which aligns with the 25 year Strategic Plan.
The Provost highlighted the achievement made so far by the College which was hinged on capacity building for Research and Teaching. He also presented the challenges which is basically on funding adding that the task to move the College of Medicine forward is a herculean one but not insurmountable. He pledged the commitment of the staff and students of the College to help the Vice-Chancellor in re-positioning Medilag as the foremost College of Medicine in Africa.
In his remark, the Vice-Chancellor noted that he has started his visitation with the College of Medicine which according to him, is suppose to be the flagship of the University of Lagos, noting that its Faculty of Dental Sciences is the first Dental School in Africa. He stated that his vision is therefore to see a University that has relevance in research to its environment, nation and the world.
He emphasised the need to look inward as a renowned University which has the best brain in this nation. He noted that research and innovation are veritable means of generating research grants and therefore calls for collaboration among other various faculties, departments and other institutions around the world for roburst research proposal as this generation is all about research. Professor Ogundipe added that the University of Lagos is a brand name with a lot of equity in its brand basket, with no need to advertize it and so it has the capacity to generate its own fund. He declared that his vision is a University where Lecturers are student friendly to enhance Alumni drive and Endowment. He then promised to run an Open Door Policy that would enable him to interact with staff and students.
The Vice-Chancellor promised that he will improve on the capacity building for research and training of staff and assured that there will be One University with three Campuses. He urged all members of staff to have the same purpose which is to take the University of Lagos to a greater height noting that they should not look down like Chicken but to look up like a soaring Eagle.
There were messages of goodwill from the Deans of Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences and Dental Sciences as well as leaders of the workers unions (ASUU, SSANU, NAAT & NASU).
Thereafter, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ogundipe and his entourage which include Prof. F. T. Ogunsola (DVC, Development Services); Dr. (Mrs.) Olukemi Fadehan (University Librarian); Prof. L.O.C. Chukwu (Director, Quality Assurance and Servicom) and Mr. N.O.A. Lawal (Bursar); embarked on the spot assessment and familiarization with the Faculties to have first hand information from the Deans.
Prof. Ogundipe directed that all their needs must pass through the Provost of the College, promising to look into staff welfare. He urged that departments should generate funds by selling professional programmes adding that it would improve our ranking as one of the best in Africa.
