Welcome Note

You are welcome to one of the most dynamic department; Department of Medical Laboratory Science in the College of Medicine of the University of first choice and nations pride. Our Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) professional programme in the Faculty of Basic Medical Science, College of Medicine of the University of Lagos is designed to produce Medical Laboratory Scientists of high repute despite scarce resources in the country, especially in the South West of Nigeria. The curriculum built on the National University Commission benchmark and aligned with the vision and mission of the University of Lagos. The curriculum is especially rich in practical and clinical training content that allows for dynamism of entrepreneurship in the health sector. The introduction of evolving and revolutionary topics in our programme, especially molecular diagnosis, logistic and supply chain managements etc makes them a rare and highly marketable products in the health market today.

Our department took advantage of the rich and lucrative experience of season lecturers from the Faculty of Science, especially for her 100level courses and the diversity of the lecturers from the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences for her advance basic science courses. Our providential location in the College of Medicine campus at Idi-araba was advantageous for our clinical posting. In addition, we took advantage of the lucidity of the city of Lagos for students outside posting at various organized private and public health facilities in the city of Lagos for secondary health care exposure in form of SIWES.

I made bold to say that we parade an amazing team of committed and highly trained professionals with excellent relevant academic qualifications. Both our academic and non-academic staff are eager to help you make a success in this programme. Your laboratory postings and rotations will provide stimulating educational experiences with the most current technologies and concepts in Medical Laboratory Science. You will be proud to be among well trained Medical Laboratory Scientist who are internationally recognized through their professional skill, research work and publications; and who have sufficient management ability, to take up mentorship and leadership roles. We hope you will take advantage of these opportunities as you pass through this professional programme.

Our great University of Lagos is undoubtedly living up to her appellation as the “University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride”. I am happy to say that the products that we have turned out thus far were tutored extensively to
overcome the challenges of the 21st century, especially in a less robust and challenging health system in Nigeria.
Insist that they are among the best trained in this country today. Already, many of them are making waves in their chosen specialties. I am confident that they will do well in any area of their choices: in health services, academics,
industries, public health system, advocacy, health management, production and products marketing, among others.

In the recent time, we have labored to create platforms for your further training and development. The Senate of the University of Lagos has graciously approved six post graduate training programmes in our department. These programmes are unique and the first of their kinds in Nigeria if not in the entire African continent. Our department is the first to mount a postgraduate degree programme in double discipline of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnosis. Our postgraduate diploma in Health Logistics and Supply Chain Management is the first in Africa. In like manner, our professional Master in Molecular Diagnosis and post graduate diploma in Molecular Diagnosis are novel. You will have the opportunity to progress beyond undergraduate training and are welcome to explore these programmes.

Finally, we welcome you to the Department of Medical Laboratory Science in the University of First Choice and nation’s Pride. The department is at all times available for counsel, guidance and consultations. We wish you the best and look forward to our association.
